You are–or are ready to become–a world-class top performer. Whether you want to perform at highest levels professionally or personally, there are a lot of parallels between high performance in any endeavor and these phenomena we see in Olympic athletics:
1. The moment you start focusing on others is when you lose.
Stay in your lane. It’s you versus you. Spend too much time focusing on the competition, and you won’t have time or energy to innovate and optimize your own business and life.
2. You will never feel 100% perfectly ready.
You might think of a hundred reasons why not to start a new business or project at this time or why not to hire a strategist or why not to launch a new service. The truth is there will always be many reasons not to venture.
3. You can’t completely remove risks — so you must manage them.
Risks are part of the game. The object is to identify them, categorize them, and mitigate them. Never to ignore them. And sometimes to go forward recognizing that the risk is worth the potential reward.
4. You will never know it all — there will always be much more to learn.
Whether your continuing education is academic or experiential, learning is the hedge against falling behind your competition or stagnating in your career. If you aren’t improving, you are backsliding.
5. There will always be roadblocks and challenges; learn to overcome them.
I learned this from an abundantly successful coach. When people want to work with him (and me) badly enough, they find the money. If you hit an obstacle, figure out how to go over, under, or around it. The highest performers are highly creative, which is one reason they are unstoppable.
6. You WILL fail if you’ve not committed to the long-haul.
High performance is hard work. You will feel like quitting along the way. Maybe more times than you can count. Every single one of the top coaches and strategists from whom I learn hit rock bottom (bankruptcy, health issues, multiple failed attempts, rejection after rejection), but they believed in themselves and believed failure was actually learning. They are true long-distancers.
7. You must learn to deal with doubt.
People who love you will want you to quit because they can’t bear to see you suffer or stumble. People who don’t like you will want you to fail. Wannabes will tell you all the reasons you can’t succeed. You will doubt yourself or your product or service, the market, your customer’s loyalty, or your own abilities. High performers know how to separate fact from opinion.
8. Motivation waivers. Real challenges are overcome through consistency, discipline, and good habits.
If you are not disciplined, you will never attain high performance. I love this statistic: The percentage of competitive swimmers who make it to the Olympics is 0.0013%. If you’ve been a competitive swimmer, you know that requires hours in the pool perfecting your strokes, lap after lonely lap. You can’t even hear the crowd cheering you on. It requires incredible consistency, exceptional habits, and even more self-discipline. That sounds a lot like being a high performer in any field.
9. Very few people will truly understand your vision and passion.
This is what makes you so special; this is your zone of genius. You have to have enough faith in yourself to press forward when others can’t see the path you are on.
10. You’ll learn the most from the most difficult times.
High performers don’t always win. In fact, they usually fail over and over again. High performers learn from and take advantage of their failures. What they don’t do is quit. Take American gymnasts for example: Simone Biles, pictured above, had to withdraw from the Games, only to come back and win a Bronze on the balance beam; MyKayla Skinner had her bags packed and ticket home in hand when she got the call to fill in for Biles and won a silver medal on the vault; Jade Carey was picked to medal in the vault but finished a very disappointing 8th, only to come back and win Gold in the floor exercise.
11. There’s no such thing as instant success or gratification.
High performance cannot be won in a lottery. It takes consistent hard work over time. And it also takes the right kind of work. Make sure you are putting your energy and your resources into activities that will escalate your progress toward abundant high performance.
12. It’s not as glamorous as it looks, but the rewards can be enormous and life-altering.
Any kind of high performance, whether professional or personal, requires sacrifices that few people are willing to give. But for those few who are willing to keep going after they have fallen, who are willing to put in the work when everyone else has gone home, and who are willing to stretch themselves when stretching hurts, the rewards can be ABUNDANT!
When you are ready to create your abundant life, it’s time to ask and answer:
